and ensure that my son and wife know
that I'm dedicating time fully to them.
It is a continual balancing act that I'm
just learning.
Jerde: I think it is a fine line. It may
not be balance but more of an ebb and
flow between the two, depending on
the time of year. I don't know if there
is a real solution. As a parent, I have
become more intentional about how I
spend my time and try not to waste it
on unproductive things.
TS: Within all the conversation
around the Fair Labor Standards
Act (FLSA) recently, there have
been comments about the feasibility of res life keeping up this 24/7
schedule regardless of how they
are supposed to count staff hours.
Do you think res life will be able to
break away from this on-call style
just a little? At all?
Stone-Sewalish: We work in a business of people, and people are, by
nature, unpredictable. That's what
keeps us engaged more often than not
in our work. We'll always be forced
to find creative ways to adapt to the
outside challenges presented to us
in a way that satisfies our personal
and professional values; this is just
a new opportunity for us to do that.
As a field we need to decide what we
want to be good at versus what we
need to be good at and go from there.
Oftentimes where we would like to
spend our time and where we end up
doing it are two different things. Staff
in all areas will always have to ask
themselves if their day-to-day is aligning with what ultimately gives them

energy. If not, we as mentors need to
be real.
Basilio-Murray: I'm not sure. At
Hobart and William Smith Colleges,
we are very high touch. We spend the
majority of the on-call weeks checking
in with students and offering support
and resources. I think we may see a
difference in the structure of the
on-call schedule, allowing staff to be
on-call for one or two days a week,
rather than a week at a time. This
would allow staff to stay within their
allotted hours but doesn't offer consistency for students in need of support
after hours.
Barile: I feel bad for on-call staff who
have children and are literally on-call,
responding to events on campus. I
recall when I was a resident director
and my daughter was first born, I had
