InclusiveU Raises the Bar of Inclusivity
Syracuse University's campus in New York has many
excellent disabilities resources for students and staff, but
one program in particular has fine-tuned its offerings to
better prepare students for life after college. The InclusiveU
program, which offers opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to participate in all
aspects of campus life, was overhauled in 2014 to provide
a better balance of academics, life skills, and job skills.
Instead of attending all academic classes during their fourth
year in the program, students participate in an internship
and follow a workshop curriculum. "We realized that, while
we were giving students a college experience, they were
still finding it challenging to get a job afterwards," says Bud
Buckhout, director of InclusiveU. "So the first major change
was to incorporate a job readiness program. During their
final year on campus, we encourage InclusiveU students to
participate in the internship year where they get to explore
jobs and work on professional skills. We also added seminars, which complement their inclusive coursework with
more of a 'life skill' focus such as technology, relationships,
and other transition-related topics, because we realized that
college isn't just about classes and grades. There is so much

personal development that happens when students step
onto campus."
Do students like the changes? "Yes, they love the seminars," says Buckhout. "It's a more relaxed environment for
them than in the classrooms, so they can get to know each
other a bit. Our seminars are packed." The first class within
the updated curriculum is set to graduate in 2019, and they
are ready for the next part of their life journey. "Many want
to live on their own, so there's a real drive to work towards a
more independent lifestyle and get meaningful jobs," says
Buckhout. "Really, it's the same as any other college student."
Although there are many similar programs across the
country, others can take note of what Syracuse is learning
from its students. Buckhout explains, "It's probably not
enough to give students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to take classes on a college
campus. To be fully included in classes and other aspects of
campus life - the social part, sporting events, connecting
with their peers, feeling a part of something - I'd say that's
what makes our program stand out."
