WHEN RESIDENT
ASSISTANT BECOMES
RESIDENT WORKER
Unions have turned their eye toward student workers
on campuses. What impact might this have on
residence life departments in the future?

T
here is a unique, new challenge
facing the residence life
departments of private colleges and
universities in the U.S., and, depending
on which way the political winds blow, it
could have a profound impact on how they
operate.
Earlier this year, a National Labor
Relations Board (NLRB) regional director
issued a decision finding that resident
assistants at the George Washington
University in Washington, D.C., were
employees and thus entitled to be
KNOWLEDGE
DOMAINS
in this article
represented for collective bargaining
by a union. Although the particular
union involved - the Service Employees
International Union Local 500 -
ultimately decided not to pursue a union
election, the decision remains in effect,
and now RAs at private colleges and
universities have the right to seek union
representation anywhere. Unless and
until the NLRB reconsiders its position
on student employees, all private sector
institutions must be prepared to deal with
this new phenomenon.
