VISION

Travel Tip: Go Far and
Gather Knowledge
It has been said that travel is the best education. It is a sentiment that I have long
believed in, and I have always made it a point to not let too much time pass before I
pack a bag and head out somewhere to further my education. Fortunately, my time
with ACUHO-I has provided additional opportunities to stretch my wings and visit
different parts of the world. It has been an eye-opening experience for sure.
Most recently, I found myself in Australia as part of a study tour and conference. Now, I have visited my fair share of campuses and been to dozens of conferences, but this trip was particularly enlightening, educational, and
entertaining. Part of that certainly was the unrivaled hospitality my
Australian colleagues exhibited. In addition, the total immersion
of my time there raised the experience to a new level. Along with
getting a first-hand look at different campuses that had their unique
buildings, policies, procedures, and operations, I was gaining an understanding of the culture, traditions, and mores that informed the
decisions that were made.

I once saw a T-shirt - probably while I was in an airport - that
read "Don't be a tourist. Be a traveler." I liked the nuance of that
language. There certainly is nothing wrong with seeing the sights
in a foreign land, but there is nothing quite like the opportunity to
really surround yourself with a culture and get to meet and better
understand those who live in it every day.
Of course, this shouldn't be a surprise to any of us. We encourage our residents to study abroad. We purposely pair roommates
from different countries. We encourage students to broaden their
horizons and deepen their understanding of the world beyond the
borders of their hometown or our campuses. It's a lesson from
which we all can learn.
By exploring these broader models and making global connections we learn from our differences, but we also recognize the
similarities. There are some goals and issues that are going to be
consistent no matter where you find yourself on the map. In these
cases, ACUHO-I can be the hub through which information flows.
At the same time - whether it is through study tours, face-to-face
events, or our online community - ACUHO-I is also your connection to help you learn about the larger world of campus housing.
That is why I believe that no matter where you call home, ACUHO-I
is where you belong.

TALKING STICK
Symbol of International
Friendship
Talking Stick magazine
takes its name from the
symbol of international
friendship presented
to ACUHO-I in 1973 by
the Ohiat Band of the
British Columbia Indian
Nation. The talking stick,
or speaker's staff, is
hand carved, and the
inscription explains, "It is
a sign of authority carried
when proclamations
are to be made or a
meeting of chiefs is in
session. It is a token
of common heritage
both to Canadians and
Americans."
