holding some spaces back so that we
can still satisfy some of the individuals
who miss our deadlines.
King: The parent feedback has been
very positive, primarily because they
are able to estimate expenses for
next fall. With this move, we approve
our housing rates for the following
academic year, just prior to re-contracting.
TS: How has your marketing planning
and execution changed with changing
timeframes?
Jochum: The fall marketing campaign
for returners has required a different
approach, with a whole residence life
team focus on the housing campaign
late October through mid-November.
RAs handed out postcards the week
prior to the campaign open date that
included an invitation to a "Preferred
Room Selection Night." Current students then had a few days to start and
complete the contract, finalize their
roommate decision, and then attend
our in-person event to pick some of the
most coveted rooms for upper-division
students. This worked well for returners. Door screen decals were added to
all residence hall lobby interior doors
that advertised the launch date of November 6, featuring well-known RAs
to catch their attention. In addition,
parents of returners received a postcard
informing them of the housing campaign start date and encouraging them
to discuss the benefits of living on
campus over Thanksgiving break.
Hughes: We begin to have housing
information sessions, primarily geared
toward the current first-year students,
at the end of September and beginning
of October before the language houses
and residential colleges applications go
live the first week in October. We also
try to make sure that upper-division
students understand that their priority
for their same area is in November and
that if they wait until spring, they select
after the rising second-years.
Bradley: It has presented some challenges. Most of our housing processes
run in the late fall, so throwing room reassignment into that mix has been taxing on our two-person marketing team.
We are fortunate to have an excellent
project manager leading our marketing
team, and she has been able to adjust
their timelines and still deliver quality
marketing materials to our residents
while many other processes that she
supports are running at the same time.
