WINNING HALLS

That said, the building does address
the specific needs of student athletes.
Like McCarthy Hall, the design of
Headington Hall pays particular attention to monitoring security and access
to the building. According to Schiffer,
the building's site planning uses both
passive and active design strategies to
manage security concerns. Organizing the building around a protected
courtyard preserves a secure exterior
against the busy streets to the north and
west while creating a private, and easily
monitored, exterior gathering space.
And, like McCarthy Hall, the building
segregates all living spaces to the upper
floors to provide security for residents.
Access to these floors is monitored
through 24-hour staffed desks located
at each stairwell and is controlled further by stairwells that connect only to
specific floors. Additionally, unwanted
guests can be identified and monitored
through one of the 96 closed-circuit
cameras throughout the building.
Whereas many residence halls
seek unity among large floors, creating
clear separations between genders was
important to the coaches and leadership in Oklahoma athletics. Part of this
is achieved by separating genders by
wing and by floor. However, apartment
units with entries serving two separate
wings serve as transitional units that
can change gender occupancy based on
demand.
The dining hall at Headington
includes a training table to support
both the nutritional and educational
needs of student athletes. The only
amenity in the building geared solely
to student athletes, the training table
is a distinct serving and seating area
within the dining hall that is sectioned
off from the rest of the area with a removable partition during meals. In an
interview with the university's Athletics
Communications, head football coach
Bob Stoops noted that the team was
"especially excited about the Sam Bradford Training Table that will provide
all of our OU sports programs with a

true competitive advantage in terms
of world-class nutrition." High-quality,
highly nutritional foods are planned,
prepared, and served to meet the needs
of high-performance athletes. Through
educational programming, student athletes learn from full-time professional
nutritionists the science and technique
behind eating to support a healthy and
very active lifestyle.
Headington Hall's location places
it at an exciting crossroads for its
residents. Whereas the building's
stunning view of the Gaylord FamilyOklahoma Memorial Stadium is a
nice perk for anyone, its situation in
the midst of the university's athletic
precinct is a vital detail for student
athletes balancing very compressed
schedules. The hall's location - with
easy access to football practice and
training facilities, the Everest Indoor
Training Center, Mosier Indoor Facility, and the John Jacobs Track and
Field Complex - places them in the
heart of where they need to be for
practice, training, tutoring, and support. With its close proximity to the
university's academic core, Headington Hall allows student athletes to
have a leg up in getting to their many
obligations quickly.

The building is certainly part of
the continued success of both the
university's athletics and academic
programs. In the 2016-17 academic
year, Oklahoma enjoyed four national
championships, and the football team
finished fifth in the nation, just missing the coveted post-season playoffs.
However, perhaps equally impressive,
since Headington Hall's completion
in 2013, student athlete grade point
averages have been among the highest
among other Big 12 Schools. According to OU President David Boren in an
interview with the university's Athletics
Communications, it offers "the student
athletes and other students who live in
Headington Hall an unexcelled place to
live, study and create a strong sense of
community." 
