and profound, yet I also see students take such risks on social
media, texting private information to each other and sharing
things with people they don't
know, which is unsafe. How
would you juxtapose those competing or conflicting themes?
What is familiar is safe, and iGen
spends so much time online that they
feel safe even when it's clearly not
safe. They are more cautious in the
real, physical world partially because
they don't spend as much time in it as
previous generations did.

I understand what you are saying when you describe students
as being so comfortable with
their parents that they are

not as likely to distance themselves from them with a circle
of friends, getting a job, making
their own money, or even
making their own decisions.
Still, I don't understand why
some students are not more
embarrassed about their
parents' involvement in their
day-to-day life while attending
the university.

that, it's not surprising that 18- and
19-year-old college first-year students
don't act like 18- and 19-year-olds did
in previous generations; they act more
like 15-year-olds, who are not ready to
be independent adults and feel they
still need help from their parents. iGen
is arriving at college with less experience with independence, so many are
not ready to be on their own and thus
rely on their parents.

This is part of iGen growing up more
slowly than previous generations. At
the end of high school, they are less
likely to have a driver's license, work,
or go out without their parents. That's
not just a function of being comfortable with their parents; it's a function
of the whole developmental trajectory
slowing down so 17-year-olds look
more like 14-year-olds used to. Given

Do you think the idea of "catching" feelings (i.e., a reticence
to share feelings and be vulnerable to others) could extend
beyond romantic relationships
to all forms of relationships?
Does this generation of students need help in developing
deep friendships and in seeing
the need to be vulnerable to
