The ACUHO-I professional development library
continues to grow with the publication of Conduct
and Community: A Residence Life Practitioner's
Guide. In this book, to be released this June, editors
JoCynda Hudson (associate director of housing,
University of Florida), Alan Acosta (associate dean
of students, Florida State University), and Ryan
Holmes (associate vice president for student
affairs and dean of students, University of Miami)
along with their team of contributing authors
explore how residence life is inexorably linked with
student conduct. The result is ten in-depth chapters plus a
host of case studies, discussion questions, model documents, and additional
supplemental resources. All are presented with a focus on transforming theory
into practice and providing real-world guidance as housing and conduct
professionals navigate one of the most visceral, challenging, and quickly
evolving aspects of student affairs.
As the editors state in the book's introduction, "While there are numerous
options of scholarship practitioners can utilize on the topic of student
conduct broadly, very little information exists on the intersection of student
conduct and college and university residence halls and how those dynamics
influence the work of residence life professionals and the experience of the
students living inside the residence halls. This book attempts to serve as
a practical resource for higher education professionals while also filling a
significant gap in the literature about student conduct in the on-campus

The following, adapted from one of the book's chapters, describes why
and how an organization's conduct philosophy serves as a guiding
foundation upon which to build policies, practices, and procedures.
