Hospital Social Network List. Available at: http://ebennett.org/hsnl/. Accessed March 4, 2009. Surgeons interact in real-time from the O.R. via Twitter AT LAST COUNT, an online sample of 184 U.S. hospitals indicated that 115 had YouTube accounts, 79 had a Facebook presence, 87 were on Twitter and 17 had blogs.1 While this assessment does not prove that health care is diving head first into social networking, it certainly suggests that it won’t be long before it’s in knee deep. “These numbers show that the leading brands in health care are actively choosing to dedicate resources to social media,” says Tom Stitt, the managing director of Aperial, a firm that plans and builds social networks for health care organizations. DURING THE WORLD’S SECOND KNOWN “TWITTER” SURGERY, SENIOR RESIDENT RAJ LAUNGANI, M.D., (left) provided the commentary or “Tweets” during a partial nephrectomy procedure in Detroit in mid-February. Seated at a laptop outside of the sterile surgical field, Dr. Laungani watched the robotic procedure on closed circuit television. His observations in real time were followed on Twitter worldwide by medical students, physician peers and the public. Another resident stands by watching (right).
