The dental technician designs the restoration on the basis of a virtual model without the need for a conventional model. The restoration is then fabricated on a computer-controlled milling unit. If the laboratory prefers a conventional production method, in 2009 it will be possible to receive physical models through central model fabrication from Sirona. For inLab laboratories, CEREC Connect provides access to CEREC users across the United States. It saves the laboratory money by reducing fabrication costs and speeding up the production process, without the need of a conventional stone model. Since no shipping and handling occurs with digital impressions, they are not subject to any dimensional changes or damage as are conventional impressions. This results in superior precision as well as consistent quality. Both the technician and dentist can review the planned restoration on the computer screen and discuss the details.
