Dental Products Report - February 2009 - (Page 31) CLINICAL 360° EXCLUSIVE SURVEY PULPDENT DONATES SEALANTS TO NCOHF Pulpdent Corp. is supporting children’s oral health by donating sealants and other materials to the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) to benefit economically disadvantaged children. The donation includes materials sufficient to seal 12,000 teeth. In celebration of the company’s recent 60th anniversary in 2007, Pulpdent has donated 60,000 sealants to public health organizations servicing underserved and underprivileged populations. The donation to NCOHF includes Embrace WetBond Pit and Fissure Sealant, which bonds to the moist tooth. Other products donated include etching gel, disposable mouth mirrors, informational handouts for parents, posters and “Embracelets,” colorful bracelets for children that display the message “embrace oral health.” February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, so it seems like as good a time as any to bust some of the myths around the prof itability of pediatric dentistry. Not the top priority The common misconception that children aren’t good for business is ref lected in Dental Products Report’s exclusive pediatric dentistry survey (see “About this DPR survey,” p. 46). Fifty-eight percent of respondents indicated a steady pediatric patient load within the past 12 months, yet the number of practices where children comprise more than 6% of their patients dropped when compared to the pediatric dentistry survey DPR conducted in 2006. In fact, the number of survey participants who reported treating no pediatric patients in 2009 is nearly 4%, up from 3% reported in 2006—an increase of 33%. More than half of the practices surveyed in 2009 say they have a pediatric load of just 1% to 5% of the entire practice, whereas in 2006, one-third of the practices reported their pediatric load was just 1% to 5%. This re ects a marked increase in practices that care for few pediatric patients. On the other hand, the number of survey respondents who said they have a pediatric load of more than 20% of their patients has dropped dramatically—by half in three years—from 10% in 2006 to 5% today. Add to this the increase in the number of dentists who say they even partially agree with the statement “In general, I prefer to treat adult dental patients only.” Back in 2006, the number was 37%. Today, the number is 59%, which re ects an increase of 59% compared to just three years ago. “I cannot speak of your survey respondents; however, in discussions I have had TALK IS CHEAP! NEW!
