Tom Daschle, now President Oba ma’s choice to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services, o ered a wide variety of ideas for reforming healthcare in his January hearing with the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. As part of that conversation, Daschle shared his thoughts on how best to reprioritize primary care and reeducate the American people, saying, “Wellness has to be cool and prevention has to be a hot thing.” His plan to “market wellness” and emphasize preventive and primary care will be a real paradigm shift for many people, but comes as no surprise to those of us in the dental industry. Research continues to support a number of oral-systemic links, underscoring the idea that the mouth truly is a window to the body. While there will undoubtedly be many more conversations in the quest for a healthcare plan that makes sense for all Americans regardless of race, class or location, we can hope a renewed focus on preventive care will shine a light on the many roles dentists play, not just “ xing teeth,” or making smiles pretty, but helping patients live longer, healthier lives. Not child’s play While patients of all ages stand to benefit from early intervention, the upside for children is signi cant. Serious statistics lie behind all the puppets, coloring books and cartoon-inspired toothbrushes we use to teach children about good oral health. According to the Children’s Dental Health Project (cdhp.org), tooth decay (dental caries) is the single most common chronic disease of childhood; children in povert y have ha lf t he odds of a dental visit as high income children (30% vs. 60%); and the Department of Health and Human Services has identified 1,700 dental health professional shortage areas. Wow. Wit h Febr u a r y bei ng National Children’s Dental Health Month we decided there was no more relevant time to share the results from our exclusive survey on pediatric care (p. 28). While the number of children being t reated appea rs to have remained stable, the number of participants responding that they would rather treat adults has increased. Many buy into the idea that children are long on hassle and short on pro t. The article suggests several ways practices can prof it through pediatric care, but I hope readers will also look at younger patients with new eyes. Rather than seeing a hurdle, see an investment in the future of the practice, the community and that child. Access and insurance are perennial problems, but I encourage you to make this the year your team considers ways to be part of the solution.
