3 Of Interest to Pharmacists The 20 drug companies par excellence in 2007 Judy Chi W hich are the top 20 pharmaceutical corporations based on the retail dollars they generated in the United States in 2007? Here’s a listing, according to Verispan. The market research company collects data from about 36,000 retail pharmacies in the country and then makes projections for the total retail pharmacy world. As the listing below shows, Pfizer is still perched at the top, although it dropped by 8% from 2006 to 2007. Companies that did well last year were Merck/Schering, Takeda, and Mylan, which all made double-digit gains during the same period. Among this rarified group of top dollar makers, three are generic companies: Teva Pharmaceuticals, Mylan, and Watson Pharma. However, if companies are assessed by total prescriptions, rather than dollars, 10 of the top 20 corporations in 2007 were generic makers.
