Cefazolin is the generic equivalent of GlaxoSmithKline’s Ancef and will be available in 1-g single-dose vials and 10-g pharmacy-bulk package vials. The medication is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections such as those of the respiratory, biliary, and urinary tracts, skin and skin structure infections, bone and joint infections, and other infections caused by various strains of streptococci. Sagent Pharmaceuticals, Teva (www.tevausa.com), and Sandoz (www.us.sandoz.com) are rolling out ciprofloxacin injection, USP (in 5% dextrose). This product is AP rated to Bayer’s Cipro I.V. for Intravenous Infusion. Ciprofloxacin Injection is available as 2 mg/ml in 200-mg and 400-mg flexible plastic containers. The antibiotic is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Barr Pharmaceuticals (www.barrlabs.com) has received approval from the Food & Drug Administration for paclitaxel injection USP, 6mg/mL. The medication is the generic version of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Taxol and will be packaged in 100mg/16.7 mL and 300mg/50 mL multiple-dose vials. It is indicated for the treatment of certain types of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and Karposi’s sarcoma. A New Jersey court has denied Connetics Corp.’s motion for a preliminary injunction stopping Perrigo from manufacturing clobetasol propionate foam, .05%, the AB-rated generic equivalent to Connetics’ Olux Foam, www.olux. com. Clobetasol Propionate Foam is a topical corticosteroid indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe dermatosis of the scalp. The patent infringement case is continuing in court. Promax Nutrition, www.promaxnutrition.net, has introduced the Promax 70 Calorie Bars, a new line of energy bars. Each Promax 70 Calorie contains five grams of protein and costs only one point in the Weight Watchers program. Tom’s of Maine, www.tomsofmaine.com, is offering two new lines of toothpastes. Both lines have been designed without sodium lauryl sulfate, a foaming agent found in many toothpastes that reputedly can irritate canker sores. Instead, the toothpastes contain purified licorice root. The new lines include: Natural Clean & Gentle Care Anticavity plus Whitening SLS-free Fluoride toothpaste, which is available in peppermint and fennel, apricot and lemonlime, and cinnamon-clove and spearmint flavors. Sensitive Care Antiplaque SLS-free toothpaste is available in wintermint and black currant. Skin Friendly, www.skinfriendly.com, is introducing Skin Protect lotion, which is intended to create a non-greasy barrier against irritants, pathogens, and microbes from penetrating the skin’s surface for up to four hours. According to the company, a top microfilm layer forms on the skin surface to repel harmful substances and a second protective layer forms within the skin. Skin Protect is hypo-allergenic and remains effective after many washings or long exposure to water. This product is recommended for skin allergy sufferers, children, and for workers exposed to chemicals, harsh substances, or bio-materials. ETC. Once sealed, the envelopes can only be opened by cutting and have a detachable, serially numbered, receipt stub that carries a unique coded number imprinted on the body of the envelope. EPS also is expanding its line of resealable and Nultraviolet UV inihibitant bags, which come in multiple sizes and colors. OTC Perrigo has begun marketing store-brand omeprazole over-the-counter proton pump inhibitor for the treatment of heartburn. The generic version of Prilosec OTC from AstraZeneca and Procter & Gamble will be sold in 20-mg tablets and will be available in 14count, 28-count, and 42-count packages.
