What treatments will patients find on pharmacy shelves if they succumb to poison ivy and other poisonous plants? Here’s a preview of products that manufacturers are itching to sell: Zanfel Laboratories is offering Zanfel Poison Ivy Wash to treat poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. The item is supposed to remove the invisible itch-causing toxin urushiol from the skin after bonding, enabling the affected area to immediately begin healing. The company claims that after using Zanfel, itching and pain are relieved, usually within 30 seconds. Tec Labs is premiering Tecnu Rash Relief Medicated Anti-Itch Spray. The medicated spray comes in a six-ounce bottle and is used to dry oozing, stop itching, relieve pain, and promote healing. Cortaid Poison Ivy Care Treatment Kit is a new product from Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Co. It includes a Removal Scrub, which is supposed to bind with urushiol, allowing it to be washed away. The manufacturer states that if patients think they’ve been near poison ivy, they can wash the exposed area with the Removal Scrub before they even see a rash. Also included in the kit is Cortaid Treatment Spray. The remedy does not contain hydrocortisone and is intended to provide a clear, flexible barrier that locks medicine on skin to relieve itching and dry the weepy rash. Consumers will also find Cortaid Advanced 12 Hour Anti-Itch Cream. The product contains 1% hydrocortisone. The cream purports to have a revolutionary barrier that locks in the power of hydrocortisone for 12 hours. The company also offers Cortaid Poison Ivy Care toxin removal cloths. The wipes are pre-moistened and individually S wrapped so they can be used without running water. The cloths do not contain hydrocortisone. Extra Strength Benadryl Itch Stopping cream, another item from J&J Consumer Products Co., is intended to temporarily relieve pain and itching associated with rashes due to poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac as well as other skin irritations. The product is designed to stop itch at the source by blocking the histamine that causes it. The active ingredients are diphenhydramine hydrochloride 2% topical analgesic and zinc acetate 0.1% skin protectant. The item is also available in a gel and spray form. J&J is offering Aveeno Skin Relief Bath Treatment. The item, intended for minor skin irritations such as poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac, is made of 100% pure natural colloidal oatmeal. Another remedy is Aveeno 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream, which contains colloidal oatmeal, aloe, and vitamin E. The product is intended to provide temporary relief of the itching associated with all types of conditions including minor skin irritations such as poison ivy/oak/sumac. Aveeno Calamine & Pramoxine HCl Anti-Itch Cream is also available and is designed to provide fast, temporary relief of the itching and pain associated with poison ivy/oak/sumac. The non-greasy formula contains calamine and natural colloidal oatmeal. Burt’s Bees is getting in on the act with Poison Ivy Soap. The product contains natural jewelweed to help relieve itching and irritation. Hyland’s is breaking out IvyComplete, a kit that includes IvyBlock, IvyCleanse, and IvySoothe. IvyBlock is a pre-exposure lotion that is supposed to help prevent rashes by absorbing the oil before it can come into contact with skin. IvyCleanse consists of treated towelettes designed to remove urushiol from the skin, exposed clothes, tools, boots, and sports equipment. IvySoothe is a maximum-strength 1% hydrocortisone cream for relieving the effects of undetected urushiol exposure and the itch from minor skin irritations and insect bites. Hyland’s also offers a homeopathic remedy, Poison Ivy/Oak quick-dissolving tablets. Ingredients include Rhus Toxicodendron 6X HPUS, Croton Tiglium 6X HPUS, and Xerophyllum 6X HPUS. http://www.drugtopics.com
