Special Report < < < The role of the pharmacist There are several roles for a pharmacist in the management of these patients, Hammond said. “For those working with clinical trials, these present some unique issues. Some trials require the delivery of drugs directly to the tumor bed, either in the OR environment or via access placed during surgery.” Hammond said in larger centers, programs may have multiple trials that allow patients to be treated sequentially when their tumors progress. “Pharmacists may need to assist in assessing the design of these trials to ensure adequate time between treatments to allow recovery from the prior treatment as well as to assess effectiveness and toxicity of the prior treatment before starting the next,” Hammond said. She added that one of the issues that she address fairly frequently with the Brain Tumor Group at Duke is the administration of oral antineoplastics to patients who cannot swallow tablets or capsules. This is a common issue for patients with brain tumors, and published data are rarely available. “The procedures we develop are shared with the patients and their caregivers when the patient receives therapy as an outpatient. I also try to remember our retail colleagues when we begin seeing new therapies in these patients, since many of them are on outpatient regimens,” Hammond noted. Shauna Choi, PharmD, a clinical pharmacist in The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center’s Pharmacy Clinical Programs, said the clinical pharmacist in the Neuro-Oncology department/Brain and Spine Center participates in the multidisciplinary care of brain tumor patients. “The pharmacist is available to all members of the healthcare team for both the outpatient and inpatient areas.
