Rite Aid addresses union protest In response to a recent protest by a labor coalition of 1199SEIU (Service Employees International Union), ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union), and UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers), a Rite Aid spokeswoman said, “The unions have their own agenda. These press releases are just another attempt by the unions to pressure Rite Aid’s corporate office to agree to let the union represent our newest Rite Aid associates in Eckerd stores in New York and New Jersey without giving those associates a chance to vote on whether they want a union or want to pay union dues. The associates at these stores have not chosen to be represented by 1199 or any union, and we’re not going to force a union or union dues on them just because 1199 is writing misleading press releases. It’s not fair for us to decide for our associates. If they want to be represented by a union, they have the right to vote by secret ballot in an election administered by the National Labor Relations Board.” NACDS is one of top places to work in associations, nonprofits In its Oct. 26 issue, CEO Update cited NACDS as one of the “top places to work in associations and nonprofits.” CEO Update is a biweekly newsletter focused on jobs, news, and people in the association and nonprofit world. In its listings of top association benefits, CEO Update highlighted NACDS’ paid leave policy and tuition benefit. NACDS supports Dextromethorphan Abuse Reduction Act of 2007 Steven Anderson, president/CEO of NACDS, applauded the Dextromethorphan Abuse Reduction Act of 2007, introduced by Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D, Del.). Anderson stated, “The abuse of dextromethorphan—especially by teenagers—is a serious concern, and our industry is committed to doing its part to combat this problem. This bill is a product of Sen. Biden’s out-front leadership and dedication, and NACDS is pleased to play a role in the development of a legislative solution. We will continue working closely with Sen. Biden and his colleagues as the Dextromethorphan Abuse Reduction Act moves forward in Congress.” Dextromethorphan is an ingredient in many cough and cold medications. The act prohibits the unregulated sale of the bulk form of dextromethorphan; prohibits the sale of dextromethorphan-containing products to buyers under 18 years old—a move already voluntarily taken by several major retail stores; and provides robust funding for prevention and educational programs to combat OTC and prescription drug abuse. The trade group for OTC makers—the Consumer Healthcare Products Association—also commended Sen. Biden for the legislation.
