Drug Topics - December 12, 2008 - (Page 12) Up front DATABASE CONTRACT FDA DATABASE WASTE-MANAGEMENT ScriptPro to provide database for FDA The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently awarded ScriptPro USA Inc. a contract to provide a searchable drug database for the agency’s internal use. The database will include all prescription and over-the-counter drug products available in the United States. The database will also feature images of drugs and drug packages, all versions of each drug, warning labels for each product, and drugspecific alerts, including the FDA’s Black Box Warning labels. Michigan hospital rst to earn certi cation for drug disposal Northern Michigan Regional Hospital of Petoskey is the first hospital to be certified for having designed and implemented a pharmaceutical waste-management program in compliance with state, federal, and local regulations. The certification also means the hospital adopted best management practices to prevent drugs from being disposed of in drains or landfills. PharmEcology Associates LLC, the company that certified the hospital, helped employees identify and manage pharmaceutical waste, and worked closely with regulators to ensure the development of programs that are cost-effective and compliant. “Northern Michigan Regional Hospital is to be commended on this ground-breaking effort,” said Charlotte Smith, president of PharmEcology. “It required all of us to work very closely with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the vendor community to ensure that proper procedures were developed and implemented.” The hospital first identified pharmaceuticals within the facility that meet federal and state definitions of hazardous waste, as defined by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and applicable state regulations. It then implemented steps to keep the list of drugs updated as new ones are added. Steps also are now in place at the hospital to segregate hazardous pharmaceutical waste in the pharmacy, patient-care areas, and outpatient clinics.
