IMPROVING PHARMACY PERFORMANCE hospital pharmacies use the tool on an annual basis to measure progress and fulﬁll the Joint Commission requirement for annual assessment of pharmacy practice. The 2008 index results were compiled from more than 250 self-assessments conducted from December 2007 to November 2008 by U.S. directors of pharmacy using the online assessment tool. Because the assessment tool is free, any hospital pharmacy leader — regardless of whether the hospital is a McKesson customer — can use the tool to assess the current performance level of his or her organization. Pharmacy employees who take the assessment and want to learn more about areas of potential improvement can contact McKesson for more information. McKesson customers are able to do even more, Borr said; they can see how their hospital pharmacy measures up to other pharmacies and obtain advice on policies likely to provide the greatest return. Pharmacies must ﬁrst take the online assessment at www. highperformancepharmacy.com. “Pharmacies need to ﬁrst understand their current level of performance, and then target speciﬁc areas for improvement in order to achieve high performance,” Borr said. “McKesson’s goal in compiling this index is to assist hospital pharmacies as they seek to deﬁne and achieve even higher levels of excellence and performance. We envision this index serving as an important indicator of the state of hospital pharmacy practice each year.” Survey results point the way The index revealed that participants’ greatest need for improvement lay in the following three areas: Patient Care services. Pharmacies completing assessments reported that they realized, on average, 59.86 percent of the clinical and nancial goals named in the survey. Education. Pharmacies reported that they realized, on average, 65.08 percent of survey goals. Financial performance. Pharmacies reported that they realized, on average, 66.57 percent of survey goals.
