Not all handlers and pets will be comfortable with all populations of patients or types of facilities. Find an organization that visits as a group and that has a group leader or a healthcare professional with you for your entire visit. Ask questions. If you are not comfortable with the response, or lack of one, consider choosing another group or alternative method of training. Try new facilities and/or programs to discover the best fit for you and your pet. Where to locate a program Both Delta Society Pet Partners and Therapy Dogs Incorporated list program coordinators or affiliate programs by region. You may also check with facilities to see if they sponsor an internal pet therapy program or have an independent pet therapy program under contract. Most AAA visitation programs are coordinated by the facility’s therapeutic recreation or volunteer departments while AAT programs may be the responsibility of the medical staff in that department. Above all, get involved! Pet therapy programs have been around for a long time and offer a fantastic opportunity to volunteer, share time with your pet, and get to know some great pet owners that reside in your hometown—and your home away from home.
