Cardiac Care “Cardiovascular medicine is booming right now,” he explains. “I love learning different techniques from other clinicians as well as the chance to share my knowledge with the staff.” Robert firmly believes the experiences he is gaining now, as a traveler, will better position him for accomplishing future professional goals.“I can draw on my mobile opportunities and share that knowledge with others if I wish to take my career into a more clinical leadership position.” A comfortable niche From the cardiac cath lab to open-heart ICU, and now in the cardiac recovery room, Andrea Royall, BSN, RN, has participated in nearly every aspect of cardiac nursing possible during her 8-year career. “I just have an affinity for the specialty,” she says. “It is a niche into which I comfortably fell.” After practicing in her hometown for 5 years, Andrea craved a change of scenery. She had already visited many locations as a vacationer, but was intrigued with the idea of observing the larger picture as a resident, at least for 13 weeks. “I knew the best avenue to accomplish that was to sign up as a mobile provider,” she states.“Also, I liked the fact that if you do not gel with a facility, after 3 months, you can leave to try out a different hospital.” For the past 3 years, Andrea has exclusively accepted assignments through Cross Country TravCorps, located in Boca Raton, Florida. “I moved into the cardiac ICU for 17 weeks. Then, a position in the recovery room opened up.” – Andrea Royall, BSN, RN For her first assignment, Andrea chose a nearby facility.“That contract was only 2 hours from my hometown,” she offers. “I chose it because I wanted to make sure I liked traveling before going off halfway across the country.” From there, she headed north to New York City, where she checked in with family members who lived across the river in New Jersey. “Though I had been there many times, it was always as a visitor,” she comments. “I wanted to see what it was like to live there for a while.” Then, Andrea went to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, where she has been assigned, with intermittent breaks, for approximately 2 years. “I had been to Southern California as a tourist and I really enjoyed it,” she says. “Eventually, I knew I would want to live here.” In fact, Andrea has enjoyed the area so much that she has accepted three different contracts with the acute care hospital, www.healthcaretraveler.com Circle Career Card No. 616 20 Healthcare Traveler May 2008 http://www.hrnservices.com http://www.hrnservices.com http://www.healthcaretraveler.com
