After 13 weeks there, I moved into the cardiac ICU for 17 weeks. Then, a position in the recovery room opened up, and because I was feeling a little burned out at the time, I thought it would offer a change of pace. I have been in this position for little more than a year.” Being in the heart of Tinseltown, she was bound to encounter a few famous faces. “One of the rewards that comes with traveling is that I get to meet people I would never have met otherwise, including some celebrities,” she says. “They are the nicest people. Of course, the hospital administrators are very serious about every patient’s confidentiality, which I appreciate.” One woman in particular made a lasting impression with Andrea. She recalls,“She was about 80 years old, and in the open-heart ICU. The woman was such a spitfire, but very sweet at the same time. She embodied the glamour days of Old Hollywood. I will always remember her.” Tips to traveling ● Gain a minimum of 2 years of experience in critical care before accepting an assignment. ● Be autonomous. ● Be open to learning new procedures and approaches. ● Keep abreast of current developments in cardiac care. Everything is evolving These travelers all agree: Before considering mobile opportunities, clinicians must be thoroughly confident in their capabilities.
