The current economy Denese concurs.“Also, we have noticed that apartment management firms are not as freely agreeing to short-term leases like they had previously done,” she says. “They know the demand for their units is high and prefer long-term contracts.” Travelers who do own their permanent residences may choose to rent them out while gone on assignment. “This is not a new trend,” observes Beth. “It’s something that has actually remained fairly consistent.” “I would say about onefourth of our PTs own their —Beth Machado homes,” adds Denese. “They can see both sides of the equation and realize how tight the housing market is right now. It is just another opportunity for them to make the most out of the circumstances.” The closer, the better. Companies have always sought to find accommodations for their clinicians as close to their contract facilities as possible. This seemingly minor consideration actually serves double duty: It cuts down on both commute time and gas consumption. “We have always tried to keep their local commutes reasonable,” says Beth. “Of course, we measure that factor in terms of time and not miles, which is important when travelers are on call duty. They have to report back to the hospital within a certain timeframe, and therefore, cannot be too far away.” “To fit in daily exercise, a number of our therapists have told us they really like having the option to walk or bike to work,” says Denese. “Plus—like everyone else—they do not want to spend any more money on gas than is necessary.” “We have always tried to keep travelers’ local commutes reasonable.” Healthcare flourishes When economic times get tough, people start facing some difficult decisions. According to the Parade magazine survey, nearly three-fourths of participants admitted to making fiscal sacrifices last year. Indeed, 68% said they gave up vacations as a way to save money.
