N E W S T R AV E L E R S C A N U S E In A Flash Collaboration enhances nurse satisfaction In Brief NPSF proposes Universal Patient Compact A Universal Patient Compact complementing the Consumer Bill of Rights and Responsibilities has recently been proposed by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF). The Compact creates an understanding between healthcare providers and their patients regarding how they will work together. It spells out the pateint’s right to information and defines the caregiver’s commitments—including honesty and transparency—to ensure the healthcare process respects the rights of patients, is patient- and family-centered, and moves the patient voice within the healthcare team. “True partnering and strengthened relationships are key to the delivery of safe and high quality care,” concludes Diane Pinakiewicz, president of NPSF. E ffective nurse-physician collaboration improves the quality of patient care and reinforces satisfying work roles for healthcare providers. In environments where it exists, both recruitment and retention of nurses are likely to increase. Intentional knowledge sharing and joint responsibility for patient care are crucial to collaborative efforts. As a nurse, you can employ specific strategies to strengthen your role in the team environment: Taking pride in your discipline is one important approach you can implement. Emulate nurse heroes and mentors, and serve as a role model. Above all, remain confident in your contributions. Developing emotional maturity is another method through which successful collaboration may be achieved. If you are a lifelong learner— continually seeking out the latest best practices, developing skills, and aiming for constant improvement—you can be an effective collaborator. Valuing unique disciplinary perspectives is essential. For example, interdisciplinary service learning opportunities, such as pairing new residents with registered nurses for an 8-hour orientation, has proven that merging the strengths of both disciplines deters territoriality. Successful collaboration also can be reached through conflict. It is important to voice multiple solutions as “managed conflict” encourages diverse ideas. Many state nurses associations, including NYSNA, offer brochures and workshops for managing workplace conflict. To effectively work in partnership, nurses and physicians must recognize their common purpose—quality patient care.
