To preserve fish and aquatic resources, unused medication should not be flushed or poured down a drain. “Trace amounts of chemical compounds often associated with medications have been increasingly detected in our waters,” says Gary Frazer, assistant director of fisheries and habitat conservation, USFWS. Unused medicine should be sealed in a plastic bag with water, and crushed. Coffee grounds or kitty litter may be added to the bag as a deterrent to pets and children. Then, bags should be placed in household trash for disposal. In addition, prescription labels with identifying, personal information should be removed from medication containers. Pharmacists can help patients safely dispose of unused medication by reminding them to crush, not flush, excess amounts. HT Source: American Pharmacists Association. (2008, March 17).
