Results are still being compiled, but so far, this question has generated one of the highest response rates in the history of the journal’s “Question of the Month.” Both young nurses and veterans with 30-plus years of experience took the time to share their thoughts. Time management and delegation were underlying themes, along with ways to handle the stress that accompanies high patient loads and staffing shortages. Interdisciplinary col“What you learn at laboration, cultural diversity, mentoring, each contract facility leadership skills, and conflict resolution among the topics can be shared with weremany wished had that been covered to a others at future greater extent. Gaining a better understanding assignments.” of different organizations’ cultures and the business aspects of nursing were particularly important to others, while a number of nurses felt information on career planning was sorely lacking in educational programs. Lifelong learning is paramount, and for travelers, like core staff, school’s always in session. As a mobile provider, you can experience how different facilities operate, learn new techniques and skills, enhance interpersonal relationships, and create a better work/life balance while taking control of your career. At your last assignment, you might have interacted more effectively with families in crisis, coping with the sometimes vastly differing needs of patients and their loved ones. Maybe you incorporated practices that better served patients of different ethnic and racial groups. Or perhaps you were taught the ins and outs of telemetry or IV therapy. Then again, you may have enhanced your skills in wound care or emergency nursing, caring for victims of crime, domestic violence, child abuse, or elder maltreatment. Fortunately, what you learn at each contract facility can be applied to your professional practice and shared with others at future assignments. If you have gained experience with state-of-the art equipment, have insights into unique approaches to care, or have witnessed successful managerial techniques, consider politely offering suggestions when appropriate. While you’re still a “guest” at their facility and must follow existing protocols, staff members Patricia Stille Lederman likely will be interested in hearing about best Group Editor practices that you’ve seen work elsewhere.
