The stunning museum boasts 15,000 costumes and textiles, plus over 18,000 drawings and paintings. Its permanent collection is housed in 45 galleries and contains works ranging from ancient Roman sculpture to masterpieces by 19th-century French artists Édouard Manet and Claude Monet. Go shopping at Providence Place. Entertainment venues, eight restaurants, and over 170 stores make the shopping district the heart of the downtown renaissance. In addition to lively streetscape and an IMAX theater, high-end shops like Coach, Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co., and The Apple Store grace the grounds. Climb aboard a Providence Trolley Tour. Enjoy a climate-controlled, narrated tour of Rhode Island’s capital city. The route begins at the corner of Fountain and Eddy Streets behind the Biltmore Hotel and includes popular spots like the Providence River and Federal Hill, dubbed the city’s “Little Italy.” See a movie at the theater with the couches—Cable Car Cinema and Café. Featuring independent and foreign films nightly, it hosts pre-movie music, festivals, and special events. The café and outdoor tables tempt diners to sample tea, coffee, soups, salads, chili, wraps, melts, desserts, sandwiches, and meat and vegetable pies. Indulge in a colonial bed and breakfast at Annie Brownell House. Built in 1899, the home features private baths and queen-sized beds in each guestroom. Located on the historic East Side, it’s within walking distance of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. A full, hot breakfast is served every morning. Nightly rates start at $115. Wine and dine at Camille’s. Renowned entrées at the elegant Italian restaurant include citrus lacquered swordfish, champagne risotto with shrimp and asparagus, and spaghettini gondola in a roasted eggplant boat. Business lunch specials, priced at $14, and a twilight menu offer elegant dining at discount prices. Fascinate your senses at Gallery Night Providence. Nineteen “art spots” open their doors to the public on the third Thursday of each month for a free, visual arts celebration. This year’s themed events include folk art, art glass, photography, recycling, architecture, modern and historic, politics and art, contemporary design, and furniture and design. Attendees can walk between their favorite galleries or park for free at one of eight lots and ride the complimentary Art Bus through the city. The festivities last from March through November. Engage your imagination at WaterFire Providence. Barnaby Evans’ elaborate, award-winning sculpture includes 100 bonfires that dance above the three rivers that pass through the downtown area. Over 10 million visitors have strolled the paths of Waterplace Park to witness torch-lit vessels gliding down the river, fire tenders eloquently passing by the flames, and firelight flickering on the arched bridges. The visual sensation, plus international music, is free to the public. Dig in during Providence Restaurant Weeks. From July 6 to 19, city eateries offer up select three-course meals on a price-fixed menu. Last year, over 50 casual and high-end restaurants served salads, appetizers, entrées, and desserts.
