Watch for overheated pets to act somewhat agitated and salivate. If you see these signs on a warm day, the treatment of choice seems to be to immerse them (except for their heads) in cool water. You can also immerse just their feet and rub the animals down with cool, wet towels, then transport them to the vet for a checkup and possible emergency care. Constantly monitor pets’ behavior in hot environments. Always follow these suggestions to make sure your small animal stays cool: keep the pet out of the sun in an area where the temperature is fairly constant; avoid temperature extremes in either direction; and make sure water is accessible and change it often to keep it cool. The bottom line Recognize that your furry friends may be having too much fun with you to realize they are in danger of overheating.
