Since I grew to know the city so well, I could have given tours of DC. Generally, I tend to go to places during their off seasons, which is wonderfully fun. I made every moment count throughout my late fall stay in Boston, Massachusetts, and I spent 2 days driving to Upstate New York to visit Niagara Falls and Cooperstown. Because of the time of year, I enjoyed inexpensive room rates at hotels right on the falls. And in Cooperstown, I was the only person visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame. Anyone can make it work I tell all of my friends and coworkers about this career alternative. It’s amazing. When I’m not on duty, I have ample time to sightsee. I recently read a magazine article about the top 25 museums in the country. Afterward, I realized— thanks to healthcare travel—I had been to 20 of them in the past 2 years! It’s important to be flexible and have an adventurous spirit, but I think anyone can make this lifestyle work. I have some friends, for example, who are married and travel together. They each work 3 days a week, usually at separate facilities, and then spend the rest of their time exploring their assignment locations together. Currently, I’m back in the Beaver State, fulfilling a contract at a 60-bed facility in Portland. It’s nice to have a break from the hustle and bustle of the larger hospitals. That’s what’s so great about traveling. I get to choose where I want to be. And thanks to a variety of assignment experiences, I know I can handle anything.
