few minutes of dreaming and a much needed bathroom break, I got back into my SUV—which was overstuffed with everything I own that isn’t in a storage unit—and continued on my drive. I saw signs for Montecito and knew instantly why Oprah would choose such a view for one of her luxurious homes. When I passed by Oxnard, I couldn’t help but wonder why anyone would bestow a town with such an awkward name. I observed more surfers in the waves and knew why they chose this paradise as their home. Lastly, I spotted palm trees mightily flanking the entry into my first gated-community dwelling and knew I was at home as well. You might say that I was falling in love. I was certainly enamored with the palm trees. I’d heard some people say they’re worthless because they can be difficult to grow and do not provide shade. But, oh, how glorious they were to me! They signify relaxation and paradise, and there are so many different varieties. Some are tall and regal, while others are shorter and brawny. Yet they’re all so beautiful. My apartment in Camarillo was just a lovely, 15-minute drive from the beach. I was in love with the sunshine, too. And wearing shorts in November. On the beach. And I was definitely headover-heels for the ocean. The long sandy beaches were so vastly different than the rocky cliffs and tide pools I had grown up with along the Washington and Oregon coasts. Plus, the waters in Southern California were warm enough for a swim in autumn! What’s more, I was smitten with my proximity to the beach. My apartment in Camarillo—provided by my travel company, Boca Raton, Florida-based RN Network—was just a lovely, 15-minute drive from the beach. I found the agriculture irresistible, too. Never before had I seen a lemon or an orange tree, red bell pepper plant, avocados growing, or a whole field of artichokes. The diversity of the area’s crops was amazing. Everything was so unlike the produce I grew up seeing on the sides of the road. There were no familiar apple orchards or potato farms. Of course, I fell in love with the people as well. Not only the friendly, funloving folks I met, but also the sheer numbers who were squeezed into the state.
