Then, just 45 miles in opposite directions were Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Even with every square mile being put to use, Camarillo had a small town feel. I was routinely recognized by many of my neighbors, from the clerk at the local grocery store to the employees of the public library, and it felt like home. Boulevard.” Practicing in a Southern California hospital exposed me to situations that hadn’t required consideration when I worked as a nurse in the Evergreen State. For instance, during orientation, the unit manager discussed how HIPAA would impact us if someone like George Clooney or Luke Wilson were a patient on our unit. We also reviewed whether it was proper to speak in a language other than English while working. I didn’t recognize some of the languages that were commonly heard at this hospital, spoken by patients and staff alike. Being part of such a culturally diverse climate—involving the “So Cal” way of life and a variety of international customs— was a vibrant, enriching experience. I loved discovering the area, its unique culture, and different ethnic cuisine. Moving every 13 weeks, I’m always eager to meet new people and quickly make friends. These are the best ways to get a true, local experience and learn about fun activities. My colleagues on the general medical unit, where I worked 12-hour night shifts, were so friendly and
