Between vacationers and those who chose to make the vehicles their homes—either on a full-time or seasonal basis—sales soared during the early 2000s. According to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), approximately 8 million households currently own a motor home of some kind. That is up 1 million from 2003 figures. But like so many industries today, the economic downturn has affected new RV purchases, and industry statistics have dropped slightly. However, for those who already own such vehicles, little has occurred to curb their enthusiasm. “Although we do not have large numbers of travelers who opt to use RVs on assignment, the percentage of those who do remains consistent,” notes Amy. “RVers truly enjoy their homes, despite the cost at the pumps right now.” This observation seems to fall in line with the latest research: Even with ever-rising gas prices, most RVers still plan to use their motor homes this year, but perhaps adjust their itineraries to conserve fuel. More specifically, the biannual Campfire Canvass survey, conducted by RVIA, indicates that slightly more than half of owners expect to choose destinations closer to home, and 35% hope to travel fewer miles. Another third of the respondents anticipate staying at a given location for longer periods than they might have a year or two ago.
