To keep safe, you should inquire about current conditions, never swim alone, and always swim near a lifeguard. If you get caught in a rip current, remain calm and don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the shoreline until you get out of it; then, swim toward the shore. Many people drown trying to save someone else from a rip current. If you see another swimmer in trouble, throw him or her a floatation device and yell out instructions. Also, familiarize yourself with the tide schedule where you plan to swim. Marine life Another factor beachgoers must consider when swimming in the ocean is marine life. Sharks favor drop-offs from shallow to deep water at dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours, when they actively feed. Keep away from the water if you’re bleeding, and remove bright colors and shiny objects, like jewelry. Additionally, you should swim in a group, and avoid erratic splashing at the surface. A stingray injury typically occurs when a person accidentally steps on a stingray that is camouflaged under sand on the ocean floor. Shuffle your feet while walking in the water to repel these dasyatids. The most common wounds are to the feet and lower legs, and require medical treatment for pain. Generally, jellyfish stings result from swimming into or carelessly handling the blob-like creatures. Prior to going into the water, look for jellyfish on the surface, and avoid those areas. Removing the tentacles from your skin, and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever can stop the sting. Protect and enjoy yourself When you spend time on the beach, be sure to protect yourself while making the most of your seaside experience. Avoiding overexposure to the sun, remaining conscious of water conditions, and being mindful of marine life are key elements to ensuring beach safety and maximizing fun and relaxation.
