Healthcare Traveler - October 2008 - (Page 10) Paws for Thought foxtails can be difficult to remove. If you suspect that your pet has been exposed to dried foxtails, groom the animal carefully and call your veterinarian to avoid potential problems. Bats under the bridge If you are lucky enough to be on assignment in or around Austin, Texas, try to see the more than 1.5 million Mexican Free-Tailed Bats as they leave their Congress Avenue Bridge enclosure each night to feed. The best time for viewing is in August, when pups join their mothers, but the bats take flight from mid-March through early November. Halloween habits I can’t close without cautioning you to keep your animals inside and safe during Halloween. Costumes and lots of activity can frighten them, and candy, while a nice treat for us, should not be part of any animal’s diet. If you want to celebrate the holiday with your pet, check out the mobile Eerie Crawler Spider Zip Along by Gund. One caveat: Since this interactive toy was made for children, your pet should only play with it under your supervision. HT Kim Kilmer is a canine behavior and training consultant.
