Should you find yourself in a position to set up your own cable, phone, and Internet, contact the rental office or realtor to find out who the providers are—many offer discounted “bundle packages.” Commuting distance Staffing agencies make every effort to place you within a comfortable commuting distance from your apartment to your contract facility. However, distances can vary due to mountainous regions, desert plateaus, and coastal communities. If you opt not to take your own automobile and plan on relying on public transportation offered in your assigned city, carefully discuss transit routes and schedules with your housing coordinator. When public transportation is not available, ask about housing alternatives within walking distance from the hospital. In the event the latter is found in a “less than desirable” neighborhood, explore the option of carpooling with a fellow traveler. Most staffing companies consistently use well-known apartment communities, so chances are, other mobile professionals will be your neighbors. “Consider your housing coordinator to be your concierge, decorator, and tour guide.” Also, inquire about grocery stores, retail establishments, dry cleaners, and recreational activities near your lodging and practice setting. If you’re bringing school-aged children with you, don’t forget to research local school districts before agreeing to a contract. Your housing coordinator can assist you with this task as well. Keys to success Learning to communicate clearly to your housing coordinator is key to a successful assignment. Consider him or her to be your concierge, decorator, and tour guide. By simply asking the right questions, you will know what to expect and when and—most important—where to find it.
