At the end of my first assignment, the staff threw me a going away party, and one of the nurses gave me an address book. Since then, wherever I go, I always have people sign it so I can keep in touch with all of the friends I’ve made. An assignment in Charleston, South Carolina, was one of my favorites. It took place during the late fall and winter months. The weather was beautiful and the summer crowds had gone. Beaches were practically empty, except for the dolphins that would come up to the shore to play. I spent lots of time admiring the amazing historic architecture and gardens. At Halloween, I went on a haunted cemetery tour, and around Christmastime, I watched a holiday flotilla of brightly decorated boats light up the night sky. I even had a few chances to visit my niece, Donna, in Savannah, Georgia. “I never want to look back on my life and say ‘I wish I had….’ As a traveler, I don’t.” —Jackie Cheek, RN No matter where I roam, however, I enjoy discovering the nuances of each community. Because I don’t bring a computer with me on the road, I do a lot of reading and try to visit the local library at every new destination. I also love to drive my Jeep Wrangler, and I look forward to exploring the surrounding regions on my off hours. It’s fun to take winding back roads just to see where they lead. Turning wishes into reality If you’ve ever thought about traveling, even for a minute, I highly recommend that you try it. This career alternative has expanded my horizons personally and professionally. I never want to look back on my life and say ‘I wish I had….’ As a traveler, I don’t—I’ve learned to strike out on my own and turn my dreams and wishes into reality.
