Healthcare Traveler - October 2008 - (Page 26) About the respondents Healthcare Traveler collected data from 1,201 individuals, with 58% identifying themselves as current mobile providers, another 21% as previous travelers, and 20% as healthcare professionals interested in a travel career. Salary-related questions were posed to current and former travelers only. Nurses comprised the majority of total respondents (90%). Nearly all current travelers and previous mobile practitioners (95%) accepted assignments on a full-time basis. Three-fifths of current and previous travelers had practiced as mobile clinicians for 1 to 6 years, with 16% on the road less than a year and nearly a quarter traveling for more than 7. Current travelers reported incomes of $69,867 (full-time) and $50,416 (part-time), on average. Travel nurses practicing full-time earned $70,417. Former mobile clinicians reported incomes of $68,106 (full-time) and $33,809 (part-time), on average. Nurses who traveled fulltime in the past took home $68,199. The mean age of current mobile professionals was 46 years. Nearly 9 out of 10 nursing and allied travelers were female. current group, top earners ($100,000 or more) represented 8%, up from 4%. Even at the lower end of the pay scale, full-time travelers seemed to have fared better. This time, less than 3% noted receiving below $35,000 annually, while 58% of part-time mobile clinicians fell into this category, up significantly from 2006, when only 36% claimed this amount of income. This change could be attributed to a number of reasons, such as more of these part-time professionals moving to other settings and accepting fewer acute care assignments each year or increasing numbers of part-timers choosing to practice in “vacation spots” or other regions that tend to have lower hourly rates. Community and home health: The highest average salaries were paid to nurses and therapists accepting assignments with community and home health organizations, despite the fact that only 3% of participants fit this classification. Full-time nursing and allied health travelers banked $76,667 each year, with a small sample of part-timers taking home $75,833. When divided between current and previous travelers, the averages showed a substantial difference: Current mobile practitioners took in an average of $81,974, Circle Career Card No. 604 26 Healthcare Traveler October 2008 www.healthcaretraveler.com http://www.aureusmedical.com/?src=004-001-001 http://www.healthcaretraveler.com
