When you return home, examine your luggage closely for any signs of insects, and clean it thoroughly. If your residence has been vacant while you’ve been on assignment, complete a similar detailed inspection. And—as in hotels—remember to never place unpacked items on the bed. By practicing personal hygiene and closely evaluating your living quarters, you’ll protect your own well-being so you can better care for others. When bed bugs bite Reactions vary, but the most common symptom is itchy red welts in a linear pattern or cluster. The insects cannot spread blood-related illnesses and are not considered a serious health threat. Apply topical corticosteroid cream or antibiotic ointment to welts, and, if necessary, take oral antihistamines to relieve itching. Allow 1 to 2 weeks to completely heal. If bitten on assignment, contact your recruiter, housing coordinator, or hotel manager. Contact a licensed pest control company for repeated home treatments. Dry clean or launder in hot water all exposed fabrics. Chemically treat your mattress, and cover your body with night clothes. Vacuum rooms and furniture every day for several weeks; dispose of vacuum bag. Your roommates or family members should be examined as well.
