Healthcare Traveler - January 2009 - (Page 20) Dream Destinations Of course, you cannot discuss vacations without naming a few of the more popular destinations. “We have people requesting assignments in areas that the general public might choose for vacations, such as Florida, Hawaii, and California,” says Bobbi. “For example, one of our longtime travelers had always wanted to visit San Diego, and we recently were able to place her there. She loved it so much that she asked to go back. “Also, we have individuals who ask to spend winters in Arizona or who wish to witness firsthand the autumn leaves in New England,” she continues. “There are snow skiers and snow boarders who prefer assignments this time of year in the mountains. Yet, for others, it is not only about the location, but also the timing. Some clinicians may only accept assignments 6 months out of the year, including over the summer, so their children can go on a working vacation with them.” Alaskan admirer “Anywhere I have not already been is where I want to go,” asserts Nancy Gray, RTT. The radiation therapist devoted the majority of her 22-year career to a permanent position. But when her husband, Cecil, neared retirement, Nancy thought the timing was perfect to switch to a mobile lifestyle. “Traveling has always been something I wanted to accomplish in my lifetime,” she explains. “I enjoy seeing new places, but for longer periods than just a week or two.” Eight years ago, she registered with Clearwater, Florida-based TeamStaff Rx. Although Cecil did not join her for the first few months, the pair has gone everywhere together ever since. “I basically appointed him as my manager. He handles the logistical details of each assignment, such as housing and transportation.” Nancy has been assigned to 17 states, from New Hampshire to California. “We choose areas that pique our interest.” One such destination is Anchorage, Alaska. Nancy and Cecil appreciate the area so much that she is fulfilling her fourth contract at the Anchorage Radiation Therapy Center. In fact, it is the facility where Nancy began her travel career. “I have already extended this particular assignment, which will keep us here for about 6 months this time around.” Nancy is scheduled on the 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. shift, Monday through Friday, at the privately owned center. “The operating hours vary with the patient load, as needed. Sometimes, the shifts are staggered so the staff does not need to work too much overtime,” she comments. “I try to stay flexible. Plus, I love the people here. So many cultures are at play, and I have learned so much about their differences and similarities.” » 20 Healthcare Traveler January 2009 Circle Career Card No. 616 http://www.medicalsolutions.com/BSN http://www.medicalsolutions.com/BSN
