Each time we are here, I find something else glorious to experience.” Some of her most fond memories have been made alongside the facility’s staff. “I enjoy every single person with whom I work,” asserts Nancy. “I have gone on a number of departmental outings with my co-workers during my various assignments here, including white water rafting, gold panning, and whale watching.” Of course, Nancy and Cecil take in other touristoriented activities on their own. One of her hobbies is photography, so Nancy cherishes every chance to capture the beauty of her local surroundings on film. “One of my favorite places is the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, which is situated about 40 miles outside of Anchorage. I go there almost every weekend. I also enjoy taking daytrips. Recently, I went to Brooks Lodge in Katmai National Park—which required two airplane rides just to get there—to watch bears catch fish in the wild. I saw at least 22 grizzlies that day.” Nancy makes sure to venture out in any location where she finds herself. Often, the Grays will access popular sites via public transportation, especially in larger metropolitan areas. “We like taking commuter trains for little trips into the cities,” she explains. “Public transportation systems usually offer maps of various routes and descriptions of attractions and neighborhood highlights that are located at each stop. What I also like about trains, for example, is that you generally can purchase a day pass without worrying about parking.” Typically, Nancy and Cecil start looking for a new destination a few weeks ahead of her contract’s completion date.
