Today, this vibrant city plays host to over 12 million visitors each year. Karin Marcus Opened by its namesake in 1903, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum contains I n 1630, Puritan colonists founded Boston as a homesteading community. One of the oldest municipalities in the U.S., Boston became a city in 1822. Named after the town of Boston in Lincolnshire, England, it was the largest town in British North America until the mid 1700s. In l770, the British began exercising stricter control over the 13 colonies, which resulted in the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, and the American Revolution. Post war, the city flourished and became one of the wealthiest international trading ports in the world. Boston’s older families became social elites. Today, “Beantown” is a bustling metropolis and is home to approximately 596,638 residents. Cultural and historic hub The Gibson House Museum was built in 1859 and is a National Historic Landmark. A single-family residence, it remains in its original state and is filled with original Gibson family furniture. Visitors can peek into the past and see how wealthy families and their staff lived. Located on Congress Street and occupying the old firehouse is the Commonwealth Museum. A state museum dedicated to Massachusetts’ people and their history, its exhibits trace the state’s history from colonial times to present day, as well as African-American contributions during the civil war. one of the most incredible art collections in the world. Surrounded by a courtyard garden, the three floors of galleries include sculptures, furniture, tapestries, and an array of artwork from masters such as Rembrandt, Botticelli, and Raphael. Founded in 1936, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) sits at Boston’s waterfront. ICA offers stimulating exhibitions and images including works from Picasso to Warhol. Boston’s Freedom Trail consists of 16 historic sites, which are all connected by a red line. Follow the famous red line to discover a mixture of churches, homes, burial grounds, and public buildings that include over two centuries of this city’s remarkably rich past. Among its many stops is The Paul Revere House, built in 1680. In 1775, Paul Revere, a silversmith, began a historic journey that made him a legend. Today, this National Historic Landmark is one of downtown Boston’s oldest buildings and one of the few in colonial history that still stands.
