Cold weather beacons skaters to the Frog Pond, an ice skating rink in the heart of the city. Warmer weather offers the opportunity to tee off at two well known greens, the George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park and the William J. Devine Golf Course in Franklin Park. Boating and sailing are also popular pastimes because of easy access to Boston Harbor. Boston offers rich culture, world-class education, and a wealth of healthcare opportunities. Founded in 1964, the University of Massachusetts Boston offers many fields of study. Its College of Nursing and Health Sciences proffers both BS and MS nursing programs, with an accelerated BS option and an Exercise and Health Sciences BS. Graduate programs include a MS-DNP, a BS-PhD, and a MS-PhD. Northeastern University, established in 1898, is a private research university with six undergraduate colleges, eight graduate schools, and two part-time divisions. The Bouve College of Health Sciences School of Nursing offers an undergraduate RNBSN degree, and the graduate program has several tracks including a BSN-MS, MS-MBA, Nurse Anesthesia, and a PhD in Nursing. Incorporated into the Wheelock School in 1938, Wheelock College is home to approximately 1,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Its Simmons School of Health Science offers several options for obtaining a MS degree through numerous general and specialized tracks. In addition, the college offers a doctorate in nursing practice. Massachusetts General Hospital, Sports galore Boston also is the home of several professional sports teams. Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox play home games at Fenway Park from February through October. TD Banknorth Garden hosts two of the city’s major league teams—the National Basketball Association’s Boston Celtics, playing December through April, and the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins, playing October through April. The New England Patriots, a member of the National Football League, share Gillette Stadium with Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution. The Patriots play their season September through December while the Revolution’s season runs March through November. Other teams include New England Riptide, which plays at Martin Softball Field, and two lacrosse teams—the Boston Cannons, featured at Harvard Stadium, and the Boston Blazers, at TD Banknorth Garden. The original teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, the 900-bed facility has 20 clinical departments and care centers specializing in cancer care, heart disease, transplant, and vascular medicine. Established in 1869, the 397-bed Children’s Hospital of Boston is a comprehensive pediatric healthcare facility, providing a wide range of health services, including transplant, cancer care, and cardiac care, for children from newborns through 21 years of age. Boston Medical Center, a 625-bed facility, was formed in 1996. As the primary teaching facility for Boston University School of Medicine, it offers a wide spectrum of services in over 70 specialties including cardiac care, and it is home to New England’s largest 24-hour Level I trauma center. Education and healthcare opportunities The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, established in 1823, is the oldest institution of higher learning in Boston. Offering a BSN, it also confers several degrees in pharmacy (including PharmD, BS Pharmaceutical Sciences, and MS and PhD in Pharmacology) and in radiologic sciences, such as a BS in magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine technology, and radiation therapy, plus advanced certificates in medical imaging. 44 Healthcare Traveler March 2009 A dynamic city Boston is a thriving metropolis with roots steeped deeply in American history.
