LCGC The Peak - July 2008 - (Page 19) JULY 2008 THE PEAK 19 Enhancing GC–MS Analysis of Trace Compounds Using a New Dynamic Approach to Reducing Background Interference Damien Rosser, Gareth Roberts, and Liz Woolfenden, Markes International Ltd., UK The advantages of mass spectrometry (MS) in combination with gas chromatography (GC), in terms of providing both qualitative and quantitative information, are well known. However, reliable identification and accurate measurement of trace toxic and odorous species at the lowest levels of interest can be compromised by chromatographic anomalies such as column bleed, extended solvent tails, air and water interference, and unresolved sample matrix components. To address this issue, a new software algorithm has been developed for reprocessing stored GC–MS data. It uses an innovative dynamic approach to distinguish and eliminate background interference as it changes throughout a run. Such dynamic background compensation should be of tangible benefit to any GC–MS work involving detection and measurement of trace target compounds in complex uncharacterized samples — environmental applications, counterterrorism, forensic studies, natural extracts, materials emissions tests, flavor and fragrance profiling, odor monitoring, and so forth. This new dynamic approach to removing background interference has been evaluated for a range of challenging GC–MS applications. Typical results are reported here. R eliable quantitative and qualitative analysis of trace compounds using GC–MS can be compromised by chromatographic anomalies such as column bleed, extended solvent tails, air and water interference, and unresolved sample matrix
