LCGC The Peak - July 2008 - (Page 20) 20 THE PEAK JULY 2008 Figure 1: GC–MS (quadrupole) analysis of a landfill gas trace odour standard using a thick film capillary column with high bleed. A new GC–MS data reprocessing algorithm has been developed that uses an innovative mathematical approach to distinguish and eliminate background interference from real chromatographic peaks, even at the lowest levels. It is a dynamic process — compensating for the chromatographic background as it changes throughout a run, but without compromising any of the peak-related information. It can be applied to total ion (TIC) or extracted ion (EIC) chromatographic data and produces a separate reprocessed data file in addition to the original GC–MS data file. An example of the effect of reprocessing is shown in Figure 1. The Impact of Reprocessing Spectral purity: From Figure 1, it can be seen that the spectral purity of trace components is enhanced greatly after dynamic background compensation. Whereas the peak eluted at 16.486 min could not be identified from the apex spectrum in the original data without manual baseline subtraction (see left hand inset), the same peak was identified automatically as thiophene with a match quality above 90% in the
