As part of the transaction, Restek’s Performance Coatings “RPC” division will become an independent company led by Paul Silvis and members of the RPC team. Horizon Technology Partners with World Water Monitoring Day Horizon Technology (Salem, New Hampshire), a manufacturer of automated sample preparation equipment, has announced that it has partnered with the Water Environment Federation and the International Water Association to promote World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) 2008. WWMD is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. The month-long program begins each year on September 18 with a data entry deadline of December 18. A test kit enables citizens to sample local water bodies for water quality parameters such as temperature, acidity, clarity, and dissolved oxygen content. Researchers Develop New Method for Drug Testing U.S. researchers have developed a new LC–MS-MS method that is more sensitive for detecting if athletes have taken drugs to artificially boost testosterone and increase physical performance. Previous testing methods used GC–MS to compare the ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone and determine if performance enhancing drugs were taken. However, measuring the T/E concentrations is difficult due to the low levels present in urine. According to the lead researcher, Dr. Jonathan Danaceau of the University of Utah, the new method “means that we can determine the T/E ratio in a sample with greater confidence, and therefore be in a better position to spot doping violations without falsely accusing innocent athletes.” Phenomenex Expands Network Phenomenex Inc. (Torrance, California), a consumables manufacturer, has announced the opening of its new subsidiary in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The new entity, Phenomenex B.V., will allow the company to serve the growing research and development communities in the Benelux region. Phenomenex B.V. expands the company’s European office network, which includes Germany, UK, France, Italy, Austria, Ireland, and Denmark.
