Majors, a senior chemist at Agilent Technologies and LCGC’s “Column Watch” and “Sample Preparation Perspectives” columnist, received the Chromatographic Society’s 2007 Martin Gold Medal at HPLC 2008. The award, named after the Nobel Prize winner A.J.P. Martin, was presented by Professor W. John Lough, president of the Chromatographic Society of the United Kingdom. Majors has contributed significantly to separation science research through the years, including his work in HPLC column technology, particle size studies, packing methodologies, and chemically bonded phases. He was the first to efficiently pack 5- m particles into high performance columns and was responsible for the introduction of the first commercial microparticulate column. RVM Scientific was founded in 1993, and is headed by Robert Mustacich. Mustacich joins Agilent in an R&D capacity along with the acquisition. Thermo Fisher Scientific Receives Two Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc. (San Jose, California), has been presented with two 2008 Frost & Sullivan Best Practices awards for Market Leadership and Competitive Strategy Leadership in Informatics. Frost & Sullivan has recognized the company for its significant accomplishments in the development of a portfolio of technologically advanced purpose-built laboratory information management systems (LIMS) products. According to Frost & Sullivan, the awards are in recognition of Thermo’s strength in delivering continuous value to its customer base and its ability to continue to capture and grow market share in a highly competitive marketplace. RVM Scientific Acquired By Agilent RVM Scientific (Santa Barbara, California), a manufacturer of direct heating/cooling systems for laboratory instruments, has been acquired by Agilent Technologies (Palo Alto, California). According to Agilent, the acquisition of RVM Scientific’s technology expands its solution of products for the gas chromatography market. RVM’s products are used to rapidly cool laboratory equipment, reducing cycle times on that equipment.
