LCGC The Peak - June 2008 - (Page 7) JUNE 2008 THE PEAK 7 The Value of Human Interaction Keeps Pittcon “Live” and Well Thomas Ricci, Ricci Communications The value of virtual trade shows is up for debate – are they simply an internet novelty or will they replace or complement small niche shows or even large conferences and exhibitions like Pittcon? In the scientific community, the internet provides great informational value. But conference attendees - conferees and exhibitors alike will tell you that there is no substitute for the face-to-face interaction that they experience at meetings like Pittcon, and therein lies the true value. V irtual tradeshows are the latest internet phenomenon and they are popping up everywhere. While they have yet to find their way into the scientific community in great numbers, their effectiveness compared to a traditional tradeshow is under much debate throughout the industry. Are they a simply an innovative idea whose impact will fade over time or are they here to stay as a viable alternative to smaller niche meetings or even large sci- entific conferences and expositions like Pittcon? That was a question addressed by LCGC Europe columnist Zosimus in an installment he wrote in “The Column” back in April 2007 (1). Zosimus offered his opinion that conferences, such as Pittcon, were becoming less effective because of their size and requirements for travel. He thought it would be much easier to simply sit in one’s office in front of a computer and download information
