While the 1980s have proven to be fertile ground for youth fashion since spring/summer 2006, the retro theme continues with some standout features prevalent in European collections, with the silhouette slimmed down from the original. Neon colors and prints have already been spotted in European high-end stores this summer and the trend looks set to continue into next. What’s new for next season is that neon and sunshine brights have moved into menswear, particularly on T-shirts. Black and white chessboard patterns are used, as well as black and red checkers. Bright color also features on natural, if exaggerated, graphics. Think Miami-inspired prints— flamingos, palm trees, florals. Music is always influential on youth fashion—particularly on menswear—and next season will be no different. Indie rock makes its mark with paint splattered Tshirts and waistcoats. The now ubiquitous skinny denim is still evident, but is being pushed aside by the slightly newer-looking traditional straightleg jean. As far as finish is concerned, the move to mid to dark denim continues, with some gray denim still evident. A key fabric for the season is lightweight nylon, used in strong colors on windbreakers, often with wet-look finishes. Balancing the loud trend is a return to two looks that also made their mark in the 1980s— sports casuals inspired by tennis and golf, and a reworking of the U.S.-inspired preppy look. Expect neat polos, blazers, and striped cardigans. August 2007 www.licensemag.com 63 http://www.licensemag.com
