Key topics include color, organic fibers, and a women’s trend forecast for spring 2008. Coral Rose, president, Eco-Innovations, will present a seminar entitled,“What and Who is Driving Eco-Design Innovation? “Eco-design” she explains,“is creating a truly sustainable garment for today’s environmentally conscious consumer. The latest innovations in the sustainable fiber and trim categories, including zippers, threads, and packaging will be reviewed.” Connie Karr, processing program manager, Oregon Tilth Certified Organic, will discuss opportunities and challenges in certification of finished garment manufacturing. An overview of the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) requirements will be presented along with a discussion that details how a company can go about claiming that its finished items are certified. Matthew C. Mole, president and founder, Vermont Organic Fiber Co. will focus on what it means for wool to be labeled as certified organic. He will address the certification processes and requirements starting at the production level (the farmer) through the rest of the production cycle—from fiber to yarns and fabrics used by manufacturers. The complex trail of sheep to garment will be broken down in terms of sourcing, processing, and supply chain issues. An overview of the markets and uses for yarns and fabrics available to manufacturers will also be covered. Greg Sturmer, CEO, IUV, will speak about ethical sourcing, specifically the Romp brand, which establishes a fully open traceable product range, enabling the customer to have the freedom of choice when purchasing products of conscience. The seminar will highlight how the company developed Certified Organic Leather and what it means for the future of sourcing in a post-Gore world.
