Currently, the Midwest and South have the greatest need, while both U.S. coasts are somewhat more supplied.” Neurologists who have chosen to practice locum tenens represent a variety of ages and professional stages. “According to the most recent data from the American Association of Neurology, the bulk of these practitioners are spread out across the career timeline,” notes Ms. Rosen. “There are neurologists in permanent practice testing the waters by taking opportunities during weekends and time off; some who are semi-retired and maintaining their skills; while other physicians have found full-time locum tenens to be a very viable alternative.” During opportunities, the role of neurologists is similar to what their duties would be in a permanent situation. “Their focus is to treat patients who have neurological disorders, which can involve anything from headaches or migraines, to movement disorders, to stroke, to degenerative brain diseases,” explains Ms. Rosen.“Available settings include hospitals, private practices, pain management clinics, headache centers, and rehab centers, among others.” She continues, “Contract lengths in the commercial sector depend upon the location.
